CROSS-PLATFORM DATABASE MIGRATION SERVICE FOR MISSION-CRITICAL SYSTEMS

Cross-platform database migration refers to the process of moving large databases that are part of mission-critical and highly available systems – such as core banking, card processing, online banking, and others – to a new hardware platform with a different byte order (endianness), or even to the same platform when the Data Guard option is not available

ABOUT THE SERVICE

CS has hands-on experience in performing cross-platform database migrations, including:

  • Big Endian to Little Endian
  • Little Endian to Big Endian
  • Migrations within the same platform when the Data Guard option is not available.

We utilize Oracle technologies such as Full Transportable Data Pump Export/Import and RMAN Incremental Backups, which together provide a simple, reliable, and fast migration solution with minimal downtime. In addition, we leverage our own methodologies and scripting tools to streamline the migration process and ensure database performance before full post migration stabilization is completed.

Considering factors like support cost optimization and other operational drivers, companies often need to migrate large production databases (tens of terabytes in size) to alternative hardware platforms such as the Exadata Database Machine, Exadata Database Service, and others.

TYPICAL MIGRATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimizing downtime of the production database
  • Migrating large volumes of critical data while ensuring data integrity
  • Ensuring sufficient system performance during and after migration
  • Deploying a standby database within migration process to ensure business continuity and data protection

OUR APPROACH

We propose a combination of Oracle best practices and our proprietary solutions, including:

  • Full Transportable Data Pump Export/Import
  • RMAN Level 0 and Incremental Backups and Recovery
  • Proprietary tools and scripting to:
    • Accelerate data transfer
    • Minimize system downtime
    • Ensure database performance during the post-migration stabilization period including full statistics collection and related tasks.

PROVEN RESULTS

Our real-world experience demonstrates that target databases over 50 TB can be successfully migrated with downtime limited to 3 hours, including standby database setup.

On June 15, 2025, Sense Bank, in collaboration with CS, successfully completed a critical cross-platform migration project of the industrial database of the B2 Core Banking System (CBS B2) on Oracle Database 19c to a modern x86-based server infrastructure running Oracle Linux on the HPe operated by Sophela platform.

The project was implemented with minimal system downtime, ensuring uninterrupted support for business processes and maintaining a high level of system availability. The new server platform not only guarantees stable operation of the CBS but also lays the foundation for future scalability and optimization of the IT infrastructure.

The main objectives of the project were:

  1. Minimizing the downtime of the CBS B2 database.
  2. Migrating a large volume of mission-critical data while preserving data integrity.
  3. Ensuring sufficient system performance.
  4. Setting up a standby database during the migration process.

The project leveraged a combination of Oracle technologies and best practices, including Cross Endian Platform Migration using Full Transportable Data Pump Export/Import and RMAN Incremental Backups, along with proprietary solutions to accelerate data transfer, reduce downtime, and maintain database performance before the full collection of up-to-date statistics. All operations were carried out under strict access control and data encryption, minimizing any information security risks.

As a result of the migration, a target database of over 50 TBytes was successfully deployed with a downtime of up to 5 hours, simultaneously with the deployment of the StandBy database in the bank’s hybrid server infrastructure.

Serhiy Belozyorov, Director of the Department for the Development of Centralized Information Systems, Sense Bank:

This project marks an important step in the transformation of our IT infrastructure. We preserved the stability of critical services while opening up new opportunities for the development of banking services.
